Kara Walker at the WHITNEY MUSEUM Part II
James Kalm is pleased to bring viewers the second part of this report on the museum retrospective of Kara Walker. This exhibition represents over fourteen years of work by this controversial artist. Known for her sexually charged images of Black stereotypes and an extravagant interpretation of slavery in the antebellum South, Walker’s tableaus push many of society’s hot buttons with her black and white focus on taboo subjects. At heart her work shows an exquisite draftsmanship and an inventive use of positive and negative space, both visually and philosophically. Featuring extended comments by curator Philippe Vergne

Marlene Dumas: Measuring Your Own Grave
December 14, 2008-February 16, 2009
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
This exhibition of the work of the acclaimed painter Marlene Dumas, the first of its scale to be mounted in the United States, is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in ociation with The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition includes approximately seventy paintings and thirty-five drawings, providing a comprehensive examination of the work of one of the most thought-provoking and fascinating artists working today. The exhibition opens with Dumas’s earliest mature works from the late 1970s. While loosely chronological, it will also reflect Dumas’s tendency to work in series, with key paintings grouped together. Through her focus on the human figure, Dumas merges themes of race, sexuality, and social identity with personal experience and art-historical antecedents to create a unique perspective on important and controversial issues of the day. The exhibition provides an opportunity to trace these themes over the course of the artist’s career, and also provides access to paintings and drawings of extraordinary technical quality. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.

WFLD Channel 32 – Illinois Lottery Drawing (1986)
Here’s another Illinois Lottery drawing on WFLD Channel 32 for all you lottery fans out there. (or is it just one person?)
Still haven’t 100% confirmed whether that’s Dean Richards doing the voiceover or not, although it sure sounds like him. (I’m a stickler for confirmation)
There’s that background music again. You can also hear it in a 1984 Lincoln Tech commercial and in other WFLD Lottery Drawings that I have posted earlier. It’s called “Power Generator” and is part of the Network Production Library of music. You can find it on an album of theirs called “Corporate Class”.
This aired on local Chicago TV on Sunday, August 3rd 1986.
