Do you think it’s natural for a guy like me to think or act this way?

Me and this guy were talking about, well, women of coarse and relationships between a man and a woman (conversation started when I was talking about why I chose to be single).

I wish I can describe what we said, but since it’s long, I’m just going to jump straight into what ticked me off.

I was talking to him about why I chose to be single and other reasons, until he brought up, "Well, the way I see it, every guy should have a woman" or something like that. Now, it might be true in some people’s cases, but to me, a guy doesn’t need a woman that badly.

In other words, if one does not think he needs woman, then people should not look down on him and think he/she is weird in a way. I’m tired of society making people feel that everyone should have somebody. If two people are happy with one another, great, but if someone is better off being single for his/her personal reasons, that’s fine, but don’t look down on that single person, wondering, "Oh, why isn’t he/she with someone", or "Dude, you need a girl". I especially hate those who are with someone, but have this "urge" or whatever to make a certain person feel lonely, by showing off his girl, or her man to whoever or something.

If you are happy with who you are with, then good. Keep it to yourself because in the end, know one cares. I’m sick of this repeatable crap cycling around me, and everything else that society is throwing at peoples faces. Call me weird, but when it comes to dating, I’m not putting myself out on the market or changing myself for someone else. I’m a decent man who’s 20, I’m an artist, I do other stuff on my spare time, and I’m doing everything in my power to make art a living for me by becoming an illustrator when I graduate. If someone ever did come across to to not liking one bit on one of the things I do…then don’t bother and waste my time.

I can be considered a nice guy, but I made myself the person who will not put up with any situation with anyone. I know the type of women out there I am interested in, so I know my taste. I don’t mind talking to a woman too, but I’m to the point where I’m not looking for anything special unless it’s serious, other than that, I have better things to do than having that waste my time.

Do you think it’s weird for a 20 guy like me to think this way?? I might be young, but I know my standards, and I’m sticking to them. I’ve tried to do a little bit of what people around my age are doing, but it didn’t work out. I even tried talking to people as well, but in the end, I realized that I’m better off not socializing with anyone unless I actually feel like it. I can have "fun", but I’m not going to force myself to be thrown in a house in some drinking party, other any of that other stuff under that category.

Also, someone told me that I’m considered a Classic Recluse, meaning one who knows he/she is recluse, and accepts it.

(I apologize for the rant. I just wanted to type this up quickly while I’m still thinking about it)

I think it’s normal for you to think that way because I feel the same way too and I don’t consider myself abnormal or weird. Just different :)

Do you think I Can get into RISD? Please tell me your opinion!?

I’m in the process of applying to RISD but I’m a little curious if I have what it takes to make it! What are your thoughts?

I have a 3.7 GPA my ACT score is a 22 on the writing I scored an 8
I’m part of my school’s national honor society, recycling club, creative writing, tennis, track, student council, and yearbook
A few words that would describe me is artistic, open minded, hardworking, and assertive.
Outside of school I am passionate about photography, digital design, website making, filming shorts, and working out.
This is my senior year of high school and I am taking trigonometry, humanities, yearbook, physics, and ap biology. In the past I’ve taken all mandatory math, science, english core classes plus journalism and two years of German.
I’m asian and both my parents are physicians.
I’m getting a recommendation letter from my yearbook adviser and my counselor.
My greatest accomplishment is being an official design editor for my school’s yearbook. I’m basically designing a well renown yearbook that will be published and shown around the world! My graphic design talent is my strongest attribute. I’ve been photoshoping since 6th grade. It’s been a serious hobby since then. I’m well educated in Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and illustrator.
I plan on majoring in graphic design and/or industrial design.
For my portfolio I’m planning to put in my top graphic designs, top photography, and yearbook designs. Is it bad I don’t have any drawing pieces? I’m okay at drawing but digital art and photography are my strong points.

I guess that’s the gist of myself. Do you think I have what it takes?
Also… is it far fetch of me to dream to dual enroll in broth RISD and Brown University? Or is that too out of my league?

I never went to RISD but I grew up around there and have known a lot of students and faculty, as well as having studied with many graduates.

Your portfolio matters. RISD was founded to supply designers to the then-thriving textile industry and it remains a place where you are judged first on your skills, not on your intelligence and character (you can go to Brown or New School for Social Research/Parsons if that is what you want to study). In other words, it is one of the best CRAFTS schools in the world. It is not anti-intellectual but even an alumna like Jenny Holzer, who makes electronic signs mainly, is VERY capable and rounded in her approach to artwork.

Reread the portfolio requirements for your choice of study, put in what they tell you to put in (and if they say drawing and it’s not the best, put in your best efforts and compliance — ability to follow directions WILL count in your favor, as long as you put in things you are strong at). And if you want opinions about whether you are RISD material, show us your artwork. I’ve known High School Dropouts who were accepted there based on their portfolios.

Enrolling in Pre-K?

You find what seems to be the perfect pre-k. It is clean, safe, and is very much into teaching children about diversity. It serves healthy, tasty meals to all the kids. Your tuition for your child is 30 dollars a month and can be reduced if you come and help out in the classroom. All but 5 of the students who have ever attended that pre-k end up going to college and all but one was/is in the National Honors society. You are in the motions of registering your child when you find out that one of the 3 people who could be her teacher is gay and, because family diversity he like the other 2 teachers (both straight), occasionally brings his partner, a professional children’s book author and illustrator in to entertain the kids and about 30% of the school’s student population has gay parents. You also find out from your neighbor pulled her child from the school last year because a mother there who has HIV often helps make snacks for the kids.
Would you let your child go to this Pre-K? Why?
This is hypothetical. I am 16/will be 17 3 weeks from yesterday.

Yes I would and I would sign up even faster since the school hires teachers based on that pesky thing, ability, and not some narrow minded list of characteristics. And the HIV + mother? As long as she follows standard safety [policy (which I am sure she would) it wouldn’t be an issue.

PLS HELP! Does this sound silly or good?

Personal Essay: Help correct introduction for SVA PLS?
Could someone please help correct my introduction for the School of Visual Arts. How could I make it better?. Is it a great start? Brutal serious honesty is preffered. Thank you

Q:

In 500 words or less, discuss your reasons for pursuing undergraduate study in the visual arts. Feel free to include any information about yourself, your goals and interests that may not be immediately apparent from the review of your transcripts or portfolio
I was born in Togo, West Africa, in a place where life is valued differently compared to most areas of the Western world. It has its own radiating culture and spirit expressed through various forms of art but it is also a place full of suffering and struggle. Growing up without most ‘normal’ things a child would have and being an only child I often occupied myself exploring nature or drawing. Drawing to me was my meditation, a time where the past and the future was a blur and only being in the present mattered, a blissful state where I found my true self and was allowed to explore it as well as express it.
Coming from a family which constitutes its own little world, encompassing several nationalities and wherein we communicate freely in English, Spanish and French I was very privileged to have the chance to travel. As I grew up a traveler, studying in different countries not only has made me more self-reliant, mature and disciplined but also very knowledgeable in many areas of the arts. Visiting museums, galleries and meeting local artists in places ranging from China, Rwanda to Venice each with their own impactful contribution to the art world I have been able to teach myself and explore its interesting world always with the notion of questioning “What is art?”
As an artist I’ve struggled many times minimizing detail and simplifying my work, there is always so much I want to say, so much I’d like to tell the viewer. Conveying emotion is my passion in art, creating art that speaks to the heart as well as forces oneself to question the self, the elements and/or society. I have a strong interest in learning in a more studious detailed way its craft, its history and how I could gear my knowledge and skill towards a professional career. While thoroughly researching about universities across the globe and taking continuing-ed courses at SVA during my year off from school to gain work experience in NYC SVA is most definitely my match.
The imagination of an artist and how they unfold it in the physical is incredibly fascinating to me. Being able to creatively convey a visual representation and interpret an idea is always a challenge. This is why I’d like to pursue a career in being a concept artist/ illustrator to challenge myself and by professors at SVA who will help me help myself get to my dream.
Coming back to the question of “What is Art”? It is everything and it is anything. If what you can imagine can be turned into art then what is thought in the mind itself is an art already the only thing is once it’s formed into the physical that’s when a world of ultimate fascination and communication opens up. It is who brings it out of the mind and births part of their soul- their idea that they are then called an artist. I’d like to be fully engaged in this world of fascination and talent and become a true artist at SVA.

just try to avoid using the word "normal" even if in brackets. there’s nothing in the world that could be seen as normal to anyone. it’s all relative!
and i would avoid to describe Togo as a place full of struggle, pain and so on: let’s give it back its pride! are you really sure you (and i) live in the best part of the world? do you think we are better than eastern and southern people? is our life happier than theirs? i won’t say so :)
just try to describe places not by giving your personal opinion, but be objective: that would give your essay a smarter tone.

Would you let your child go to this pre-k?

You find what seems to be the perfect pre-k, it is clean, safe, and is very much into teaching children about diversity. It serves yummy Kosher vegan meals to all the kids. Your tuition for your child is 30 dollars a month and can be reduced if you come and help out in the classroom. All but 5 of the students who have ever attended that pre-k end up going to college and all but one was or is in the National Honors society. You also find out from your neighbor pulled her child from the school last year because a mother there who has HIV often helps make snacks for the kids.
Would you let your child go to this pre-k?
This is completely hypothetical. I am only 15, no kiddies yet.

Yeah. HIV is a SEXUALLY transmitted disease, so it won’t be transmitted though food. And diversity is always good. I would only suggest adding another non-kosher and meat meals for kids who aren’t Jewish or vegan, and inform the parents with the existence of both choices.
